Botswana celebrated World Blood Donor Day

Ministry of Health and Wellness recently joined the rest of the world to commemorate the World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) day in Selibe Phikwe.

Giving his keynote address, the Assistant Minister of Health and Wellness and area MP for Boteti East Mr. Sethomo Lelatisitswe indicated that the main purpose of the Ministry celebrating this day was to raise awareness on the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank donors for their life-saving gift of blood.

Honorable Lelatisitswe emphasized that blood and blood products are used in medicine, both for planned treatments and urgent interventions. “Blood transfusion helps to prolong the lives of patients suffering from life-threatening conditions. It supports complex medical and surgical procedures as well as for treatment of wounds during emergencies of all kinds (natural disasters, accidents, armed conflicts etc.), and has an essential life-saving role in maternal and perinatal care.” he explained.

The commemoration was attended by different sectors and the Selibe Phikwe community who were given an opportunity to donate blood.
