Listeriosis monitoring intensifiesThe team also toured Senn food plant as the main manufacturer of processed meat locally. A Specialist from the Ministry of Agriculture & Food Security, Dr Kerapetse Sehularo explained that understanding Listeria as an organism is vital. He said that the organism has always been there as it lives on people and animals adding that it grows at low temperature and survives in everything including water and soil. Dr Sehularo said Listeria affects vulnerable people such as pregnant women, those with viral infections (HIV/AIDS), elderly and the malnourished people. He noted that some sources of the organism includes unprocessed milk, cheese, vegetables (sprout and uncooked) even hospitals.
Dr Sehularo explained that in line with what happened in South Africa, Senn Food personnel and management practice good hygiene, and that their process of smoking and cooking at the production stage destroys the organism. He emphasized that after this process they ensure that they is no contamination thereafter
