Madigele opens a haemodialysis facilityThe Minister of Health and Wellness Dr Alfred Madigele recently performed the official opening of Renal Care Institute, a haemodialisys facility.
Dr Madigele informed attendants that prior to 2009 Ministry of Health and Wellness offered limited care to patients with renal failure, which mainly involved acute peritoneal dialysis for patients with acute renal failure. He continued to say that few patients were referred to South African based hospitals for haemodialyis treatments, at great cost given transport and hospital costs including ICU stay. “Few patients were then able to continue with haemodialysis treatments, which required them to travel to South Africa 2 – 3 times a week”, lamented Dr Madigele.
“My Ministry addressed the need for this specialized treatment in Botswana by getting into a partnership with Nkadilatlha Investment trading as Renal Care Institute” said Dr Madigele. According to Dr Madigele the partnership involved providing the specialized services in Government facilities for the first time in 2009, and has been involved in the setting up and running of a Renal Dialysis unit in Gaborone at Princess Marina Hospital (PMH) under a Private Public Partnership initiative.
The facility offers services to patients who have been stabilized in an acute hospital center and are deemed to be at a low risk of complicating acutely, and on average helps 150 patients per month. Read more...
