Media Tours Blood Transfusion Services

The National Blood Transfusion Services organised a media briefing on 3rd June 2014. The event included briefing sessions, demonstrations and a tour of the National Blood Transfusion Services (NBTS) facilities. This initiative is intended to ensure that the media can understand why we should donate blood? What happens to the donated blood as well as explaining how the donated blood is tested, processed and delivered to the people who need it.

Addressing the media, the Senior Consultant Pathologist and acting Director of NBTS Dr M. Kayembe pointed out that the media is an important partner that needs to join forces with the Ministry of Health in increasing awareness as well as appealing and encouraging people to give blood.

Since blood shortages occur from time to time, it is important to ensure that the country health system has adequate and reliable access to safe blood as well as help building an understanding that blood donation is potentially live saving. In this regard, the media can support the Ministry of health to ensure that blood is always available for patients requiring blood transfusion.

On the World Blood Donor Day 2014, Mr Kenneth Segokgo informed the media that this year, Botswana will celebrate the this event at Tati River Lodge in the City of Francistown under the theme “Safe Blood for Saving Mothers.”

In Botswana, our source of blood is from unpaid volunteers. Every health person aged between 16 -65 years who is 50kg and above is eligible to donate blood.
