First Medical Doctors Graduate

After years of learning in a noisy warehouse at the bus rank the students studying at UB’s Faculty of Medicine (FoM) are now qualified doctors. This is a huge milestone for Botswana because it is the first ever group of Doctors to be produced locally. The graduation comes at a time when Botswana is in need of medical doctors. The 31 qualified medical doctors meet the required international standards after almost six years since the programme started.

Through hard work and determination 31 of the 35 pioneering doctors who were enrolled in the programme have finally graduated. This year’s valedictorian awardee was from the School of Medicine. Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Koolatamo Malefho said the country decided to locally train internationally competent doctors to cut costs, as it is too expensive to send students abroad. He said that they faced callenges of finding highly competent educators

Speaking at the Launch of the Botswana National Medical Internship Training (MIT) Programme and celebration dinner for the graduates Head of Biomedical Sciences, Doctor Mokone who regarded the graduates as the Crème de la crème of the country called onto government to enrol top achieving students with UB School of medicine.

The 31 doctors are among the 35 who initially enrolled in the course. Before being absorbed into the system the doctors will undergo Medical Internship Training Programme which will commence end of October this year.

The Founding Dean of UB School of Medicine Professor Major Bradshaw said the Doctors will be the first group of students to be on internship. The school of medicine was this year upgraded to the faculty of Medicine (FoM).
