Suicide can be Prevented

Youth office and Mental Health Division under the Ministry of Health and wellness recently held a youth suicide prevention day workshop for young people at Maharaja in Gaborone.

Internationally, the World Suicide Prevention day is observed on the 10th September and the whole of September is regarded as awareness month for suicide prevention themed “walking together to prevent suicide”. Speaking at the event Ms, Goitseone Phatshwane Youth Officer in the Ministry of Health and Wellness emphasized that the objective of the day was to raise awareness on suicide prevention and to create a platform for the youth to share on issues affecting them.

Some of the youth, who successfully avoided suicide, shared their testimonies as a way to encourage their peers on overcoming mental challenges. The audience also participated in an exercise to share what’s bothering them.

The workshop was graced by representatives from institutions such as Gaborone Universal College of law (GUC), Boitekanelo College, Institution of Development Management and out of school youth.
